The government might be closed, but Moab Gear Trader is OPEN from 8am to 9pm everyday!

Grooming

cross country skiing la sal mountains

The track was groomed on Thursday 1/20 and by Friday evening it was still in great shape.  There has been some ski & fat bike traffic, but no snowmobiles or other motorized vehicles.  The surface should be great for activities that require smooth, packed snow.  Temperatures were quite mild yesterday, and as a result, it was a tad bit icy.  Metal edged skis are highly recommended for beginners if you plan on skiing today before the storm.

Road

The Geyser pass road is snowpacked and down to gravel in many places, but that will change tonight with our storm.  Watch this website and also the Avalanche Forecast for updated plowing information.

Backcountry

The only good news is that a storm this weekend will hopefully add to our non-existent snowpack.  It will take several more storms to allow for any sort real backcountry travel.  A few grassy meadows will possibly allow for some low angle turns after the storm, but one should use extreme caution so as not to acquire a season ending injury by striking hidden rocks or timber.  Be patient and check the Avalanche Forecast before you head up.

Weather

And now the good news.  A winter storm will begin affecting our area today with winds ramping up and temperatures dropping throughout the day and tonight.

In the mountains winds could gust up to 50mph and we might see 6″ – 20″ depending on which point forecast is used.  Sunday will be cold with a high around 15 and winds still blowing at 15 and gusting to 30mph.  This puts wind chills in the -10 range so be careful if you choose to play outside tomorrow.

Moab will see 50 degrees today ahead of the cold front with a chance of rain this afternoon.  A chance of snow tonight and highs will be in the upper 30s tomorrow.
