Moab & La Sal Mountain Conditions Update for Friday, December 9th, 2016
Snow.
The La Sal Mountains have more than enough snow to allow for unhampered Nordic skiing, snow shoeing, and light touring. Backcountry skiing on the steeper terrain requires much more caution due to the shallow snowpack. Stay out of the forest to avoid deadfalls, but be aware that high winds have smoothed much of the snow surface which is now hiding hazards under a seemingly level surface of snow.
La Sal Mountain Road conditions.
The La Sal Loop Road is icy and snow-packed on the upper half, so please drive with care. The Geyser Pass Road is plowed, snow packed, and slippery.
Grooming

Weather
Another storm will be passing through this weekend and clearing by Sunday night. A POINT FORECAST for 10,000 feet shows maybe 6 inches possible. Many other locations have reported some impressive snowfall, so it looks like we will have to wait our turn for the next storm and let some of the other mountains share in the great snow we have so far this year. The Wasatch have reported 4-7″ in the past 24 hours , and Colorado resorts have received 6-12″ and snow will continue through the weekend.
Avalanche
Please visit the Moab Avalanche Center website for up to date information. If you find that information useful, PLEASE consider a small (or large) donation. Also, the main Utah Avalanche Website has an enormous amount of educational material. Snow cover is dense enough for back country travel, but extreme caution should be taken with such a shallow snow pack.
Desert
Generally dry conditions this fall have kept the Mountain bike and hiking trails snow free. The short days and cold weather are the only limiting factors to your next adventure!
