La Sal Mountain Snow Condition Report 12-4-18

Well folks, for those of you who are trying to deny it, winter has fully entrenched itself in Southeastern Utah!! Everyone else should put new batteries in their beacons, wax their skis, make sure their wipers and tires are ready to go and head up to geyser Pass.

Snow

Conditions at Geyser pass were knee to thigh deep snow as far as you could wallow today. Skis made for easy traveling across the landscape, as did snowmobiles, splitboards, and sleds. (all were in use today).

Roads

The La Sal Loop Road was plowed and sanded today and was clear pavement to about Sunset Corner. From there up it was icy and snowpacked so please drive with caution. Geyser Pass road was plowed today…THANK YOU GRAND COUNTY!! The deer were EVERYWHERE though at lower elevations near Pack Creek, so be watchful!

Grooming

LUNA reports that grooming operations might begin by next weekend. For those of you ready to get out, there is a packed trail but no corduroy so leave your skate gear at home for now. Wider skis with or without metal edges would be best suited to current conditions whether you are exploring up Geyser pass or really anywhere else in the range. Its soft and deep folks!

Weather

Sun and clear skies will dominate for the next while except for some isolated snow showers Thursday in the mountains. temperatures at 10,000′ should be in the 20s int he day and teens at night. Moab should see highs in the 40s and lows in the 20s after tomorrow’s frigid high of 35.
